Class List

The class list is usually the same from year to year.  However this year we are offering a special class in Verse Reading to honour the 100th Anniversary of the end of the War to End All Wars.

Performance pieces in our annual classes are own choice to provide a diverse and interesting class and to support a variety of work.  .

Everybody who performs gets a certificate.  Winners are awarded trophies and medals – details in the programme.

VS       VERSE SPEAKING (SOLO)
To speak from memory a poem of the entrant’s own choice.
A & B– 4 minutes max, C to E – 3 minutes maximum.

HV       HUMOROUS VERSE CLASS (SOLO)
To speak from memory a funny poem of the entrant’s own choice.
A & B– 4 minutes max, C to E – 3 minutes maximum

VR       VERSE READING (SOLO)
To read aloud a prepared piece of published poetry of the entrant’s own choice.
A & B– 4 minutes max, C to E – 3 minutes maximum

VPC     PEACE AND CONFLICT
To celebrate 100 years since the end of WWI and because Coventry is a City of Peace and Reconciliation, we are offering a special anniversary class for the 2018 Festival.  Certificates and medals will be awarded as normal as well as a prize for the overall winner.
Entrants should read aloud a prepared piece of published poetry of the entrant’s own choice on a theme of Peace or Conflict..
A & B– 4 minutes max, C to E – 3 minutes maximum

SR       SIGHT READING (SOLO)
To read aloud a test piece provided at the time of the class.

SCR     SCRIPTURE READING (SOLO)
To read aloud a prepared passage from the Bible or from the Scriptures of your own
religion in English translation.

Acting

All sections should be from published work, unless otherwise stated, and performed from memory.

SA       SOLO ACTING
To perform an acting piece – own choice.
4 minutes maximum

SHK     SHAKESPEARE CLASS (SOLO)
To perform a piece from a play by William Shakespeare.
4 minutes maximum

DUO   DUOLOGUE CLASS
To perform a duologue of the entrants’ own choice.  Performances must be published work.  Want to write your own?  Look at the Writing Classes!
& B – 6 minutes maximum, C to E – 5 minutes maximum.

In drama classes, no marks are awarded for costume or make-up and most people perform in rehearsal dress or clothes that suggest the appropriate costume. Hand props may be used. A table and chairs will be provided at the venue – if you need special arrangements, contact the committee.  It is important that time limits are observed.  Lines must be memorised and a script provided for the adjudicator.

Public Speaking

PUB    PUBLIC SPEAKING (SOLO)
To make a speech on a subject entirely of the candidate’s own choice.
A – 6 minutes max, B & C – 5 minutes max, D & E – 4 minutes max.

PAM   PROPOSE A MOTION
To propose a motion entirely of the candidate’s own choice.
A – 6 minutes max, B & C – 5 minutes max, D & E – 4 minutes max.

Writing Classes

An opportunity to write and perform your own work. Copyright remains the property of the author, however, the Festival reserve the right to use entrant’s work in their publicity materials.

PWS   POETRY WRITING CLASS (SOLO FEE APPLIES)
To write and perform a piece of poetry written by the candidate.  This should be unpublished work.  Entries are invited in all age groups.  Performance time of the poem should not exceed 3 minutes.  A copy of the poem must be submitted to the committee at least one week prior to the class.

WDS   SMALL DRAMATIC SCENE
To write and perform a small dramatic scene for two or more characters.  This should be unpublished work.  Entries are invited in all age groups.  A script must be submitted to the committee at least one week prior to the class.
A & B – 15 minutes maximum, C to E – 10 minutes maximum.

Opportunities for Groups

GVS    GROUP VERSE SPEAKING (GROUP)
To perform a poem in a group of 5 or more (selections should be published work and recited from memory.)
5 minutes maximum performance time. Entries invited in all age groups.

PMV   POEMS FOR MORE THAN ONE VOICE
To perform a poem in a group of 4 or less (selections should be published work and recited from memory.)
3 minutes maximum. Entries invited in all age groups.

SDS     SMALL DRAMATIC SCENE (GROUP)
Entries invited in all age groups (12 characters maximum.) To perform a small dramatic scene of the entrants’ own choice. Performances must be published work.

Prizes!

Every competitor or group who performs at the Festival receives a certificate and a crit sheet with evaluation and advice from an experienced Federation adjudicator. Certificates are stamped to indicate the level achieved.
Trophies are awarded in most categories and allocated to an appropriate class – trophies are awarded for the year.
The winner(s) in each age group within a class also receive medals which they can keep.

What now:

Decide on the classes you wish to enter.  Download and fill in a entry form and send it, with a cheque for the appropriate fee made payable to The Coventry Festival of Speech and Drama, to our Treasurer (address on Entry Form.)
